The swamp survives because in the late part of the nineteenth and the early twentieth century it was important for the supply of flax fibre for the manufacture of rope and woven wool sacks. When these products where replaced with cheaper synthetics the swamp ceased to have economic value. Fortunately it wasn’t drained to provide land for farming or housing and it remained neglected until its unique ecological values were recognised.
